New Year 2023

Living your Best Life

As the New Year approaches with great speed, it’s tempting to think we ‘should’ make some new year resolutions.

Kinesiologist Maria Franklin shares some thoughts on how to move into the new year with a little less pressure on ourselves.

"I’ve tried this (to make resolutions) in the past and rarely, if ever, made it through the first week of January let alone seen February!

And I’ve now taken the ‘should’ word out of my vocabulary as it always feels like an imposed expectation rather than something that makes my heart happy.

After the excitement or stress of Christmas, January can seem rather flat, so it may be a good opportunity to take some down time and assess how you feel about your life, where you are and where you would like to be.

If the two don’t match, then consider what you would like to keep in your life, and what you’d like to change. Do you need to give yourself more time, maybe learn to say ‘no’ more often, or say ‘yes’ more often to the things that make your heart sing.

Perhaps you could take time to enjoy the simple pleasures that help you feel relaxed and content. A walk in the woods, a splash in the sea, or a coffee and a chat with a friend.

Would gathering some new skills be helpful. Maybe a course, joining a group that interests you, or taking up an activity or sport that you’ve thought about but never got round to doing.

Are you so busy living life, working and supporting yourself, that you have lost touch with your passion and who you really are. Trying a few different activities can help you move towards a better understanding of what excites you and kindles a spark in your heart.

The more we can motivate ourselves from the heart, and use our head to guide us, rather that the other way round, the easier it is to grow the life you are meant to live.

And when we all live life from the heart, what a wonder full world it will be "
