Flu Season? or Low Vitamin D season?
Flu Season? or Low Vitamin D season?
It’s been over 4 months since we were able to make Vitamin D from sunlight as, in the UK from October to March, the sun is too low in the sky. A bunch of research suggests a link between vitamin D levels and infections from respiratory viruses like flu. It has been found that those people with higher levels of Vitamin D tend to have less respiratory infections and fewer hospitalisations. Hence why it’s been suggested that ‘flu season’ could be renamed ‘low vitamin D’ season.
Although we can get some Vitamin D from foods such as oily fish, it can be hard to get enough to maintain optimum levels. That’s why taking a good quality supplement through the autumn and winter months can help to support the immune system as well as bone and cardiovascular health. The immune system helps protect us from disease and a wide variety of pathogens.
I use the Epigenetics Liposomal Vitamin D2, with selenium and molybdenum, to support Immune System health, and 2 or 3 times a week also use their Liposomal Vitamin D3, for bone support and hormone activation. The liposomal forms can be rubbed into the skin, all it needs is 1 drop, and are absorbed directly without needing to be digested. There are a range of options for Vitamin D but I find these generally test well for people and are easy to use.
It won’t be until April that there starts to be a small window of opportunity around midday to use sunlight to produce Vitamin D, so it may be a good idea to think about supplementing now to optimise your levels. And if you don’t have the opportunity to be outside with bare arms or legs in the middle of the day throughout the summer months, you may benefit from a Vitamin D supplement all year round.
We’ve had some lovely cold, sunny days this winter, as well as some dull, grey days. Regardless of the fact that we can’t make Vitamin D whatever the weather right now, it is still good to get dressed for the weather, get out side and take a walk. It always seems brighter outside than looking through the window at grey skies.
