Still not feeling quite right?

Are you doing all the ‘right things’ to feel well but still not feeling quite right? You might be eating a fresh, natural diet; taking supplements; getting regular exercise; and trying to reduce stress, but still feeling below par.

One possible reason is often toxins and chemicals which can disrupt your normal body systems. It’s part of the dark side which we don’t always want to consider, but dealing with them simply could make a big difference.

Toxins (there isn’t a kinder word I can find to described them) come in all manner of disguises. This series looks at a toxic metal called mercury, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) cite as ‘one of the top ten chemicals or groups of chemicals of major public health concern. Mercury may have toxic effects on the nervous, digestive and immune systems, and on lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes.”

Several years ago, I discovered mercury was at the root of my health problems and in my search for the cause and the remedies, it also became the trigger for me to train in Kinesiology. My consultant used kinesiology to monitor levels of mercury in my body and establish the most effective nutrients and herbs to help me get rid of it.

Mercury - The Silent Marauder


Unfortunately we live in a world where we are exposed to toxic metals on a daily basis. They enter our bodies through the water we drink and the food we eat, for example in herbicides, pesticides and fish. Other routes in are personal care products, dental fillings, home furnishings, air pollution and medical drugs.

When the level of toxic metals becomes too high for the body to deal with, then we can start to have a range of symptoms as they disrupt our natural body processes. This series of five articles on mercury toxicity describe where it comes from, how it can affect you, how to test for it, how you can help your body to get rid of it and how to avoid it.

My interest in toxic metals, mercury in particular, began almost 20 years ago. I had been feeling quite unwell and unable to track down the cause. Eventually I was fortunate to find a consultant who understood toxicity and could explain how mercury was at the root of my symptoms. More importantly, he helped me to understand what I needed to do to become well again.

Mercury is considered by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be one of the top ten chemicals that are a major public health concern and state that ‘Exposure to mercury – even small amounts – may cause serious health problems, and is a threat to the development of the child in utero and early in life’.

Where does it come from?

According to Dr Christopher Shade, two of the biggest exposures to mercury are dental amalgam and fish consumption. He claims that people who don’t eat fish and don’t have any amalgam fillings (current or previously) rarely have any significant amounts of mercury. It is also found in vaccines although it is should be gradually being removed.

The different guises of mercury?

There are three main forms that are a problem:-

1. ethyl mercury which is found in vaccines - the most toxic as it can penetrate the body !! very easily.

2. methyl mercury from fish - uptake is about 95% and it also penetrates the body easily.

3. inorganic mercury from amalgam dental fillings - more damaging to the body than methyl 3 of 6 mercury although it does not bioaccumulate (become concentrated inside the body) as easily.

Mercury vapour from amalgam fillings is absorbed into the body and also as it is being swallowed, it passes through the digestive system, irritating the gut lining and blocking the detoxification route out. The inorganic mercury found in dental amalgam can be very damaging to the digestive system and the body’s detoxification pathways.

Mercury is a problem because it has a very strong ability to mess up your body systems.
