Kinesiology - A very unusual Consultation

It was a very unusual consultation and I was fascinated. I had been unwell for sometime and finally found a specialist who could help me understand what was going on in my body and, what was more important, help me to recover and function normally again. I had never heard of kinesiology and was very excited by the idea that it was a way to access information from my body and find out what I needed to do to feel well again.

This wonderful, warm doctor had a wealth of knowledge about toxicity and nutrition, and, being a research scientist, had documented and compared his kinesiology results with the laboratory tests and found they were highly correlated. I now understand that he was using techniques from Applied Kinesiology to test me for toxicity and to find the best ways for my body to deal with it.

Kinesiology was originally used to test muscle function, the word being derived from the Greek ‘kinesis’ meaning movement. Later, George Goodheart DC (1918-2008) determined that every muscle in the body is associated with an organ and its neurological reflexes, and an acupuncture meridian. He discovered that muscle testing is not only a diagnostic tool but can also be used for therapeutic benefits.

Goodheart established that muscle testing, or muscle monitoring as it is sometimes called, can be used to observe how the nervous system controls the muscle and can provide a number of assessments of, for example,

the nervous system and structural balance

the energy system, as muscles are connected to meridians

the psychological and emotional state and how to address any issues

Goodheart found that muscle strength / integrity could be changed immediately when certain neurological reflexes and other factors connected to the muscle were stimulated, thereby affecting nerve energy flowing to the muscle. Switching on circuits to help muscles work better has been likened to turning up a dimmer switch to increase the power to the light bulb so it can glow brighter.

Many different stresses can inhibit a muscle including physical, biochemical, mental, emotional, environmental and electrical. The purpose of muscle testing is to look for and release stress, and enable a smooth flow of energy in the body. Kinesiology is not treating or diagnosing disease, but finding where the energy is blocked and releasing the blockages thus allowing the body to heal itself. We feel at our best emotionally, physically and mentally when energy is flowing freely.

The technique allow us to look at all aspects of health and their interaction, as people experiencing similar symptoms may have quite different underlying imbalances. For example, I see many people with digestive problems. For some it may be as simple as avoiding one food group, and supporting the healing process with specific nutrients that may be lacking as a result of the digestive problems. With other people, we may work solely with anxiety and stress around present and past events, and by enabling the body to process and release areas which are stuck, the digestive symptoms reduce and disappear without any changes to diet. For others, the process may involve a combination of dietary and nutritional changes along with managing stress and anxiety. All aspects of our selves interact and kinesiology allows the body to indicate which ones need to be addressed.

Kinesiology is also a great way to help us remain healthy, so that small imbalances are not enabled to grow into bigger symptoms. Your body cannot hurt you, everything it does is sending you a message. Before your body has to shout at you, and even before it whispers to you, you can hear it speak it’s wisdom. If you are interested in learning more about kinesiology, my colleague and I are running a One Day Introduction to Kinesiology, combining aspects of Neuroenergetic and Health Kinesiology. The date is 19th May, at the Centre for Integral Health, Shrewsbury. For more details please go to Introduction To Kinesiology or contact me directly, the details are below. --------------------

About the Centre

The Centre for Integral Health was started in 2013 by director Ben Calder after studying Integral theory since 2011 and over 10 years of professional practice of kinesiology and Bowen fascia Release Technique, coupled with the desire to explore the application of the Integral Model in relation to health.
