Why Poetry Healing?
Why Poetry Healing?
We often reach for our favourite songs, the ones we know by heart. Somehow in the chord changes, in the mystery behind the composition and in the articulated lyrics, there is refuge – the artist has been there, felt it, survived and lived to tell the tale. There is great comfort and validation in hearing our own stories.
In poetry, it is the same – if you have access to the kind of poems that touch your heart with words and touch your soul with silence, then a reprieve is at hand. Poems invite a response, you can write your own notes against it, you can write a song of agreement, you can write a diary or journal to explore a theme further, you can pen you own poem, that speaks even deeper of your heart and mind and life. There’s an alchemy in writing out your feelings, that doesn’t come any other way.
And like music, poetry is greatly accessible for self-medication – you can reach for pen, pad and poem as often as you reach for your ipod, MP3 player, CDs or even records. The music of words is always there to catch you and carry you onto the next part of your journey.
In order to start your journey of discovery into such poems of illumination, hopefulness and inspiration, come along to one of Bethany’s taster sessions, held on Tuesdays at the centre. Check the calendar for dates and times. Bethany will be happy to take bookings and answer any queries.
