Craniosacral Therapy has been called “the osteopathy of the cranium”. It is a very light pressure, touch and hold therapy where the experienced practitioner tunes into the craniosacral rhythm and the micro-movements of the cranial bones. During the process, the soft tissue will begin to shift back into the ideal position, slowly and gently. It may feel as if nothing is happening, or the body may twitch, as internal torsions release. You will leave feeling deeply relaxed and the unwinding may gently continue afterwards. Emotional release can be a wonderful side effect of the process.
Shocks, accidents, trauma, difficult births, surgeries, repeated daily strains, poor nutrition, and even environmental pollution can cause disruptions to the structure of your body and the flow of body fluids. These changes can result in pain, illness or unexplained psychological distress. When in pain, most people tend to tense up, pulling their spine and bones out of their ideal posture.
With poor posture, organs cannot move normally, and other body systems must change to move around them. This creates abnormal strain patterns and energy cysts (inertial compensation patterns) in the soft tissues. These changes can be the source of joint stiffness, chronic pain and even distressed emotions.
A vital fluid that is a part of the Craniosacral system is the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The CSF is pumped around and through the brain, to the base of the spine and back to the brain, nourishing the nerves that service your organs. The Craniosacral system has its own rhythm, which is slower than the heartbeat. The CSF cushions the brain and spinal nerves, keeping them from jarring impacts as well as pumping nutrients back up to the brain. Shocks or severe impacts create kinks in the fleshy casing, preventing the smooth flow of CSF. When this happens, people complain of headaches, foggy thinking, unexplained anxiety or anger without apparent cause.
During a session, experiences may include body twitches/jumps, washes of heat, gurgling of the digestive system and feelings of emotion (somato-emotional release) or no noticeable changes at all. Despite your body reactions, you will experience an overall feeling of very deep relaxation. Some people report this level of relaxation as similar to deep meditation or a long, refreshing sleep. You remain clothed, lying warm and relaxed on a massage table. Very gentle touch and specific holds of the head, neck and parts of the trunk and feet may be included according to your wellbeing requirements.
